Women Seen as Housewives

Many shows have portrayed women being as a housewife. In this show The Flintstones Fred is being lazy and is just reading his newspaper whereas Wilma is vacuuming, this is basically what a typical housewife is portrayed in many shows being the housewife and just cleaning. Also, in the show The Simpson Homer is being lazy on the couch and is creating more mess by dropping his food. If we see Bart he's chasing his dog which can cause much furniture to fall and make things out of order, and as we see Marge she’s vacuuming. Many media shows portray a whole family but the women are the ones who are seen as the housewife, the one that cleans.

Today, across the globe that has changed families help one another to get things done faster so they can enjoy time with each other rather than the mom being the one that is always cleaning. Also, women have started to go to work while men can be the ones who can look after the children and clean the house. But as many still do see a typical family as the women being the housewife, taking care of the children whereas the men are the ones who are expected to have a job and deal with the financial matters.

In my opinion, between both parents, they both can do something as equal as what women can do and what men can do. In my family, both of my parents work and during the weekends my father does help clean. When I was younger my mother use to work night shift and my father was the one who took care of me.

This video shows that a father can take care of their children even if the wife is at work. By a father spending time with their children can have a great impact rather than the mother always helping them with little homework or cheerleading as shown in this video.

Questions

1. Do you think that women are still seen as a housewife?

2. Do you think that both parents can do something equally the same? Why?

3. What do you think about the video?

  1. Even though we live in the 21st century, women are indeed still seen as housewife in many cultures and traditions. Many societies in South Asia and Middle East Asia have a tendency of dominating women and not allowing them to work outside the home. Hence they are forced to play the role of housewife.

Actually if we talk about gender equality, then there is no doubt that both parents can do many things the same way. It’s just that either they are not allowed to fulfill the responsibility of opposite gender or they don’t want to accept the fact that both of them are human in first place than being men and women.

The video is fantastic. It indeed shows an example of a dad who helps his daughter in cheerleading practice and also shows that the so called “feminine” job can actually be done by men too

  3. According to me, women are not seen as housewives in Canada. Obviously, this differs from country to country. As Rakesh mentioned, there are still countries where women staying at home is the ‘norm’. Let’s go back in the past when the World Wars were on. Each and every woman was to take care of their family and look after the house. How has Canada and other countries developed from these ideologies about stay home mother’s? Why are countries like India and Pakistan still following this trend from the past? I think it all depends on the trend which is followed by other families. For example, in Canada we see that almost every family is a dual-income family. This means, both the parents work to contribute to the family. In other developing countries, it is not the ‘norm’ for women to work and earn. Hence, the trend that they stay at home and clean.
Shifting views towards balancing work between both parents in Canada, it is definitely possible. Fathers are now allowed to take paternity leave while mother’s go to work. There are many options as such available to father’s in today’s society but some are not willing to take advantage of it. There is still the belief that mothers are the better nurturer of children so they are to take care of their children.
Speaking about the video, it’s just another video to prove that fathers can also take care of their child. I think people just need to shift their views in order to believe that it is possible for fathers to become the better parent; it’s not always the mothers!

  4. In my opinion, men and women can do things the same, but there are certain roles that women are better in then men, and vice versa. A man can work, also a women can work. Men can clean, also women can clean. On the other hand, in raising children, women have the best personality and character suited in taking care of children, better than the man. I am not saying the man can not do it, all I am saying is women can do it better.

  5. In response to your questions, I think women are seen as an housewife, but now that we're in the 21st century, things are beginning to change. Women are now having their own careers. And I would like to disagree with Omar's statement about women having the best personality and character in taking care of children. I think that men and women both can equally take care of a child. There are many single men out there raising their own children, a good example of this would be Eminem! He's divorced and is raising two girls. Lastly, I would like to say that there's nothing one sex can do better than the other. :)

I clearly said that men can raise children, But women, in general can raise children better. I can play basketball, but obviously Lebron James can play better. Many single man due raise children, and i have seen many myself. My point is that women, due to their personality and character can raise children better, and better suited for raising children. Remember i am not saying men cannot raise children, they should help their wife in raising the child. My point is women are better at it.

  8. in my opinion men can take care of their house and kids but a mother has something that us men don't. its the love and the affection, the women nurture the kids and care for them, us men on the other hand have very different opinions we care and love too but after a certain time of period we get tired and most men don't like doing stuff and the reason for that is we are lazy we require a lot of entertainment and when we are busy we don't like to be disturbed. But when we have fun and care for our loved ones we do it to the max and us men we love kids too but in my opinion not as much but as it goes for the cleaning and all we suck at it so that why we leave it for the women because we know they can do a better job!

  9. I don't think women are seen as housewives in today's society. In both developed and developing countries, women do work now. Some years before, it's true that women were supposed to work only at home. But now the world has changed and people are modernizing.
Yes, both parents can equally do things. There's not a single thing that can be differentiated between the two sexes if we consider "work". I disagree with Omar when he said that "women have the best personality and character suited in taking care of children, better than the man". It's stupid to think that! As said by Nisant that there are many single males who take care of children. From my experience, even I have lived alone for five years while my mom was away. I bet not even my mother took care of me like my father did. So, I think there's no work which a man cannot do.
The video inspires fathers to spend some time with their children instead of only mother taking care of the children. It makes a lot of difference when both the parents work for their child.

  10. I don't think all women are seen as housewives anymore, but if a woman is a housewife she's a housewife. Some girls grow up wanting to be a housewife. They dream of getting married and having kids, and that's their goal in life. Being a housewife is only a bad thing if your fored into that position like Rakesh said. It sucks that in other countries women are forced to be housewives, but the only way to solve that is through education. Others need to realize how important women are in a society.

Both parents can contribute equally to the household, but in different ways. Many people presume that women are the better caregivers, but when I was younger, my dad was the person that took care of me most. A parent is a good parent because of their ability to takecare of a child, not because of their gender.

  11. Maybe it's not about women not being able to be as good of a worker as men. Maybe it's preferrable for women to stay home since they face more sexual harrasment in workplace. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why things are the way they are.

I also disagree that women in other parts of the world are forced to be housewives. I have lived in some different countries in Asia before coming to Canada, and the living conditions are totally different there than here. Women cannot pursue a career because it costs to go to school and it costs even more to go to University. Many people don't have that kind of money. So the men usually go out to look for work because physically it's exhausting and they care for their wives so they don't want them to face any trouble. However, women that are able to afford schooling, they become very successful.

It's really funny how people who live in Canada make things sound so easy. It's not that easy to do things when you live there. So it's wrong to blame men all the time and say that they're oppressing women.

If anyone is to be blamed for these things, it's the politicians. If a country has a good government, then they would provide good health care and education. Unfortunately, the governments are corrupt and they take all the country's income.

  12. @Rakesh: I agree, that even in other countries around the world, women are still seen as housewife that’s because it’s the “norm”. But, if you look at Canada today don’t you see the change? Many women have started working and aren’t called a housewife. Also, gender they aren’t equally the same I do agree but at least single parents are trying to fulfill children’s expectation of both parents so that the child doesn’t feel that they are missing one of their parents. It’s just the fact that many have to change their views that mothers are always the better parent, fathers can be the better one too.

@Heli: I totally agree with you, it depends on the trend of the country, whereas in India and Pakistan that has been the same trend for many years. Also, for the dual-income family trend which is obviously a trend in Canada today, which I believe is a good idea so that the male in the family isn’t always the one dealing with the financial matter, the female can pitch in as well. Also, fathers taking paternity leave is also a great idea because that way the mothers aren’t the one that have to worry about many things at least the father is there to care and help them around. The statement that you made about that there is still a belief that mothers are the better nurture of children that is true because mothers are the one that provide children with the love, attachment and the children knowing that no matter what happens their mother is there for them, even the video statement is true many do need to change their views, since there are many fathers out there that are a single parent taking care of their children.

@Omar: I do agree, since mothers are known as the nurtures for children but fathers can do exactly the same. The fact that many still think that fathers can’t take care of their children equally as a mother is wrong because many fathers who are a single parent can do exactly the same as a mother can, many people have to change their views about fathers not being the best parent as the mother.

@Nisant: I completely agree with you Nisant, as I mentioned before to Rakesh and Omar, fathers can be a better parent than the mother since there are many examples out there today. He example, you gave about Eminem, exactly he is raising two girls, which his two girls will turn out perfectly fine. I like the statement you said about there’s nothing one sex can do better than the other because today, both parents are seen equally.

  13. @Jawa: Yes, mothers are the ones that provide the nurture, love and affection but have you thought that maybe there are men out there that can prove the same? What if a married couple ends up in a divorce and the child they have is very young, won’t the father have to provide the nurture, love and affection? I completely disagree that men suck at cleaning, there are many men that I have seen clean and they don’t suck at it. If they try to clean then they would know that they don’t suck at it, there is no harm in trying something new. Women can do a better job, but have you thought that cleaning one house is so much work for one woman? It’s better if men do clean and don’t think that they suck at it because women do need help cleaning especially if they own a big house.

@Prutha: I do agree with you, many women have started to work, which is a good thing since Canada has become a dual-income family. From your experience, its totally great, to see that fathers can do exactly the same as a mother can do or probably even better, and as we can see today you have turned out completely fine, so obviously fathers can do the same as mothers can.

@Ashleigh: I do agree that it does suck for women who are forced to be a housewife in some countries, but in some countries they don't have a choice. In India and Pakistan, there are housemaid's who come and clean the house and wash the clothes for you, when the women of the house just have to cook, which isn't a big deal for them. The housemaids choose to do this job because they earn for their family and children. I totally agree with you, mothers are the ones that are seen as a better parent but from having different experiences you don't know who can be the better or the parent who is the better caregiver.

If you read my comment carefully, I clearly stated that men do take care of children. I have seen many myself, My dad took care of me for a certain period in my life. My point is that women due to their physical and emotional characteristic MAY be better then men, in raising children. If you look around, and ask any person, ninety percent of them will say my mother use to take care of me, i'm not saying that men didn't take care of them, but their mothers use too take care of them most of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  15. OKAY! We can't really compare mothers and fathers and say who is better at taking care of us. They are both EQUAL. I see no difference between their caretaking and love. It's like saying, "pick your mom or your dad. You can't choose both." Well I think they're both wonderful and either can do whatever it takes to raise a family, whether that means that the mom has to work outside or the dad.

  16. As I think, women are not seen as housewives anymore, because women in now have rights to do whatever they want. They can go to work like men if they want, and they can also do their own businesses if they want to. It is not like 100 years ago when women were oppressed by men. Now women are respected by men. Women and men are being equally educated so they both can have potential to have good occupations for their future. Therefore, there are a lot of women who are in higher the positions in their fields. In my opinion, both parents cannot do the works equally because women tend to be good at nurturing and taking care of children and small households whereas men are mostly good at outside work, such as physical works. Since they have different skills, they cannot contribute equally, so they should do whatever they can do better. Lastly the video was very interesting.

  17. @Omar: I totally disagree with you about the fact that, if you were to ask any person ninety percent of them would say that my mother use to take care of me because when some babies are born there are cases where the mother leaves or has passed away after giving birth, so isn't the father left to take care of the baby?

    ReplyDelete
  18. @Soonho: Women and men do have their own different skills, but they can do both if they do try. Haven't you seen single parents taking care of their children both ways, as being a mother and a father? I completely disagree with you when you stated that they cannot contribute equally, they both can, women are more educated and are working and if they are a single parent then they are to handle the financial matters and the outside work. Men also can contribute equally because as well as if they are a single parent then they are to handle the household chores. As in the video, we don't know if the father was a single parent, but see he was helping his daughter cheer-lead when that is a mothers job.

  19. i agree with u prina but the thing is that most men when they come from work are tired they are too lazy to do any work, as for the cleaning i can probably do it better then most girls but its that after school and all when i get home i'm too lazy. The father has to nurture the kids but if divorce does occur most likely mother take the kids and father just supports her.

  20. @ Prina

Thats why I said ninety nine percent, and not one hundred percent. I may have exaggerated it, but we can agree that majority of children were mostly raised by their mothers. I am aware of the unfortunate cases where the mother passes away, or leaves. That is why I said men, can take care of children, my dad took care of me for a certain period of my life. All I am saying if men can take care of children, women can take care of children, better then men in most cases, due to their loving and caring traits as a mother.
