Although women have been give all the rights, freedom and opportunities to prove themselves to the world, why is that they are still seen as the minorities? If a situation a man loses his job, he would feel embarrassed because he is considered to support the family or be the provider of the family. But if a woman loses her job it won’t make any differences within the family, as they are not considered as the provider. Women are still seen as unworthy within society. Women have been proving themselves in each field of study or jobs and are the same level as men; most women are much higher than men. Women are constantly underestimated that they cannot achieve that same position in a male dominant society. They cannot do the harder physical work because of their gender but at the same time are judged many times if they choose to stay-at-home mom. What is wrong with staying at home and take care of our children? I think it is one of the hardest jobs ever!
Women are rising not only in education level but at sport level too.

I am really amaze by this articles as it a great example to show that women are not only mentally strong but are physically too. Whenever we hear the word “sports” the very first image that it creates in our minds is group of men, not women. Men believe that females are not physically strong enough because of their gender, which is somewhat true as males have certain hormones that provide them with more physically strong characteristics. This by no means proves that women are not capable of hard physical work. There are many women seen working at places where lot of hard labor work is required.
In the articles it says that even though Candace Parker’s has amazing success it did not get the attention it deserves. Is it because a woman has achieved it? Would it be so wrong for women to hold a higher position in any field than a man?
Also in the articles it state that Parker contract is worth less than Lebron James even though she has accomplished more than him. Why is the society so conflicted that women aren’t worthy enough of well-paying jobs?
I just hope that in near future society becomes more open-minded so both the genders are seen equal in the eyes of each other.

I was actually thinking about this a few days ago. Like why is the men's soccer so popular yet the women's soccer team are not. I can name so many famous male soccer players, but I don't even know if the women has a team! Isn't that ridiculous? Why can't women's soccer team be promoted and advertised like men's soccer team?
ReplyDeleteTalk about dominant discourse here! Clearly, men are more famous in sports because if we look at the past, it was always the men who participated in sports. Women had to be the house wives who would take care of the children and everything else. Let’s just say, they were ‘trapped’ in their houses before. Compared to the males, they were more outgoing for different purposes like job, hunting and etc. They were obviously engaged in sports back then, so that’s how it was carried on. Like Mursal mentioned, it’s always the men’s sports team which are being promoted.

It’s not just about who can do it better or how equally each gender is portrayed in the society. It’s mainly about the media and how they convince people that they are the reliable ones.

Which one of them would you personally prefer; men’s world cup match or women’s world cup match? I don’t think you would disagree the fact that women really are not able to show the skills, techniques and enthusiasm as men during the game. Even the media has portrayed sports in such a way that sports played by women are not shown much due to less demand from the viewers.
But as Heli said, sport has always been part of men’s activities and women in earlier days never participated in it. Hence women are always seen as the new ones in the sports and are always paid less and not focused by the media.
To achieve equal recognition as men, women might have to wait for more 40 to 50 years to observe the trend of the sport industry and get chance to be influenced and focused my media.
@Rakesh: I disagree with you about women really are not able to show the skills, techniques and enthusiasm as men during the play. There are many women who are known for there outstanding performance, Examples from the Vancouver Olympics 2010 some of the best women athletes are Kristina Groves won a sliver medal for speed skating, Marit Bjoergen from Norway won three gold medals for Cross country Skiing. The Canada's women hockey team for 2010 Vancouver Olympics had gained gold medal with their hard work. This encouraged/influenced Canada's men hockey team to win for our country. I am sure that you are aware some one the best Indian women athletes such as PT Usha known as "queen of Indian track and field" and current Saina Mirza for Tennis. All these women are known for there best performance. I agree with you that media portrays men sports more than women. But, media won’t be able to ignore these outstanding hard works shown by women for a long period of time. I personally disagree with you that women have to wait 40 to 50 years to prove themselves and have a lot of opportunities in front of them that they are at the same level at men in sports because women have started to prove themselves and it would not that long .

In the past, women were not into sports as they were expected to stay at home and take care of children. Since this image has been shattered, women are able to excel in sports that interest them. Unfortunately, there are more male’s sports teams than women but I believe that won't be till long time.

ReplyDeleteJawa has a point there. Women do have to take the extra step to get where they want to. But the sad part is that women still conform to the whole male dominance. Women still stay within the boundaries of what women can do and what they are supposed to do based on society. It is only the odd few to take advantage of the power that women can have, especially in North America. Women are not taking the initiative to fully fight for their rights when we have an equal chance of being "high up there". We are just as capable of running the world as men do. If all women were to step up, then the point of equality would be earned.
ReplyDeleteWhile what a person does is a factor in a person salary within a contract you have to think about the viewers. More people are watching lebron show his skills then Parker. this is even evident in NHL vs NBA. Kobe will always get payed more then any hockey player because of the fan base of basketball which is watched more then NHL. And the other reason is that men will always get payed more then girls, i don't know why it just is. even though women are shown to get the job done better and faster then men.....
ReplyDelete@Jawa: There are many females who work as a TTC driver in Canada. I am sure you have seen them. I agree with you that women have to step up to achieve what they want. Also you refer to cooking contest a woman would be considered but what do think about all the chefs working in some of the famous restaurants and 5 star hotels are men. Many males understestimate that women are not physically strong, but that is not true. AIBA is Women’s World Boxing Championships is platform where women boxers from all around world compete and hope to become a world champion. I am sure that we might seen females as home movers soon.
