YO ' Mama

Yo mama a term that many people use, it is either used to disrespect someone or to make fun of someone by making fun of their mom's. This in our society has gotten out of our hand because people some time cross the lines and goo ahead of them selves, which can lead to fight killing and all.

Most people believe that men and women are over protective about their mother and if anyone says anything about them the person would loose it. In the recent year most fight that happened in certain area 's started from someone saying your mother or yo mama and the other person got mad and offensive. This is even shown in media many celebrities use these kind of jokes.

Here is a video of one of the celebrities having fun and saying some jokes.

Questions:

Why do you think that people use yo mama instead of yo papa?
why is it that every time something happens your mom is involved?
Do you think that people are over protective of their mothers?

  1. In my opinion, the reason why people use the term “Yo mama” or “Your mom” to insult other people, instead of using “Yo papa” is that mothers are usually regarded to be more “higher” ranked in terms of love, and attachment.
Therefore, when people try to insult others they use the term “your mom”, because it can impact the other people more than anyone. Literally most people are over protective of their mothers because mothers are the ones who feed, care, nurture the child mostly than anyone. That’s why the bond between mothers and children are usually very stronger than their fathers.

  2. In my opinion the reason why people use "yo mama" is because mothers are the ones that nurture us the day we are born, they're more attached to us and the ones that understand us the most when were in need which makes us have more love for them so whenever someone says something against their mother then the person would obviously get offended.
The reason I think that when any sort of event happens the term "your mom" is involved is because of the influence of others and the television show "yo mama".
Many people are over protected for their mothers is as i mentioned before because they are the ones who nurture us the day we are born, they care for us and are always there for us.

  3. According to me, this whole “Yo Mama” joke thing is just sad. Why are people willing to offend their mothers in order to make someone laugh? I’m sure everyone gets offended when their mother’s are brought into any conversation which is negative.
The video is really pathetic. A basketball player who is well respected in the society shouldn’t be using such terms to make people laugh. Little children look up to him as a role model and this is what he has to say! If a 10 year old saw this video, he too would begin using this phrase. Again, it all comes back down to the media and what they show. This can have a great impact on a little child because they too will start using it in school and the trend continues! Just because a famous basketball player used “Yo Mama”, children will use this because they want to be as ‘cool’ as him!

  4. Well, I think they use that term because fathers are male so they can protect themselves whereas mothers/sisters are females and the brother/son feels an obligation to protect them. Once again we can see a stereotype that males are shown as more masculin. That's why many people use this phrase to provoke one and make them fight, just as you mentioned.

  5. I do agree with everyone’s comment which was mentioned before. The fact that people tend to use the word “yo mama” rather than “yo papa” plainly goes to the fact that majority of mothers are housewives and they have total responsibility of taking care of their child. As the complete nourishment of child during the earlier stages of life is done by mother, the mothers are pointed to be responsible for the behavior that the children show in the later stage of life when they become adult. Hence people tend to involve the word “mama” to point out the fact that they assume that mother is responsible for current behaviur of their child.

  6. I agree with all the comments above, but I strongly agree with Mursal. I feel that all males would feel offended when insulting their mother/sister. And it is true that by insulting a male, it wouldn't have the same effect because males are capable of protecting themselves. I think everyone uses the term "yo momma" because it's everyone's weak spot. I think that no one is capable of living their life with out the love of their mothers. I also think that everyone is protective of their mothers. Lastly, I think any one that uses the term "yo momma" to insult one another is inappropriate because there are people who may no be living with their mothers, and this can hurt their feelings. This is just like how you shouldn't be using the term "that's gay", because you can't always tell who is homosexual and who will be offended.

  7. I agree with most of the comments made by my fellow classmates. Anyone would get offended when someone insulted their mother/sister. Firstly, who started this term “yo mama”? On the second thought, I think that mostly males use these term “yo mama” as a joke or to insult someone, I might be wrong but I have never heard a female use this term. I think males have always underestimated females and think that women would not say anything or stand up to fight for themselves. Even though males show themselves as strong and powerful, they are not. Males think that women are uneducated but, this video is proving who is uneducated and do not have any respect/ manner for anyone. I agree that not every male is like this. There are males who support, respect and don’t underestimate females. I am very happy that males have started treating females in a considerate manner. I agree with Nisant that using this term can hurt individual’s feelings and it’s just inappropriate to use it for insulting either of the parents. Heli made a very good point about how all this can impact the future generations as they look upto them as role models. I think parents should be more aware what children see and hear from the media. But question is how long can you stop your children from not watching and hearing this? Is there a stop to all this? Do the media really care about the future and what place it would be if all this continues?

  8. A agree with Mursal, in how when men feel obligated to protect their female family members. Also wanted to add that, Its a really risky matter when making fun of someone others family member especially the mother. When you make the joke, you don not know how the other person will react. They might react in a harsh matter, or they might shrug their shoulder and take it as a joke. In my opinion, do not even risk this situation with someone you do not know very well. Perhaps make that joke, with a very close friend that you are certain knows you are joking, and would not take offence to it.

  10. i agree too all of you guys, and i understand how you guys are talking about the child being more towards the mother side because of the up bringing and love by the mother, but what if a child has never had a mother or the mother passed away when he was born, why does he still get offended and takes action when his mother is brought up, and why is that when a celebrity makes the joke its ok but if anyone makes a joke a person gets mad?

  11. @Jawa

Even if people haven't seen their mothers or they lost their mother, they would be so upset when people insult them by saying "Yo Mama" than insulting their fathers. I believe that children are born innately with more attachment with their mother. In my opinion, people have deeper emotional connection with the mom since mothers are the carrier of the children and feed them on the early stages of development. (In other words even before they are born)
Also, people do not much care about when celebrities make jokes about mother, because their job is to make people fun, not like insulting people with emotions.

  12. People use yo mama more then yo papa because it hurts more. as everyone is saying here i do think we have special bonds with our mothers. I think this is formed from our mother taking care and feeding us when we were young, that's why we react to anything concerning our mothers.. It's every person duty to protect their mother's integrity after she carried you in her womb for 9 months.
